Day 10 – Favorite classic book
I don't know what metric is being used to judge a book a classic, but since Red Harvest was published in 1929, it's definitely old enough.
Even if you haven't read Red Harvest, you're probably familiar with the story via the movies Yojimbo, A Fistful of Dollars, Last Man Standing, or even Sukiyaki Western Django. A stranger comes to a town torn apart by feuding gangs and takes them down by playing them against each other.
Here the stranger is the Continental Op (working for the Continental Detective Agency) who comes to Personville at the bequest of a man who's murdered when the Op arrives. But the Op is still on the case.
Hammett's noir tone and real life experiences as a Pinkerton Detective elevate the book, but what I really like is the infectious nature of violence. At one point the Op is talking about how the town is changing him, how everything looks like a weapon which is chilling.
"There's a piece of copper wire lying in the gutter in front of your house -- thin, soft and just long enough to go around a neck with two ends to hold on. I had one hell of a time to keep from picking it up and stuffing it into my pocket, just in case."
